How to photograph a garment so AI reproduces it correctly

To photograph a garment for AI on-model generation, lay it flat on a plain, evenly lit surface, shoot straight down from directly above in soft indirect daylight, fill the frame with the piece, keep it uncreased and fully visible with no folded-under sleeves or hems, and shoot one extra close frame of any print, texture, or hardware. Almost every complaint about a print drifting or a colour shifting traces back to one of those five things.

What a generator actually reads from your photo

It helps to know what the input is doing. The generator is not copying your photograph. It is extracting a description of the garment, its cut, colour, print, texture, and hardware, and then rendering that description onto a body. Anything your photo leaves ambiguous gets resolved by the model's prior, which means it gets resolved by what garments usually look like rather than by what yours looks like.

That single fact explains almost every failure people report. A sleeve folded under the body is not a shorter sleeve, it is an absence of information, and absence is filled in. A print photographed at an angle is a print whose repeat and scale have to be guessed. Warm indoor light is not a lighting choice, it is a claim that the fabric is warmer than it is.

The five mistakes that cause drift

  • Shooting at an angle. A tilted photo distorts the cut and skews the print's repeat, and both get baked into the result. Shoot straight down.
  • Mixed or coloured light. A warm bulb plus a window is two colour temperatures on one garment, and the rendered colour lands between them. Use one soft, indirect source.
  • Parts of the garment hidden. Sleeves tucked under, a hem folded back, a collar collapsed. The model does not know what is under there and will invent something plausible.
  • Creases from the packaging. A hard fold reads as a seam or a drape line and often survives into the render as structure that is not in the piece.
  • Only one wide shot of a detailed piece. A busy print, a knit texture, or branded hardware needs its own close frame, or it becomes an impression of a print rather than the print.

The two-minute method, on a phone

  1. Find indirect daylightNear a window, out of direct sun. Turn off every indoor light so you are working with one colour temperature. Overcast daylight is the easiest light there is.
  2. Lay the piece flat on plain groundA white or light grey sheet, a table, or a floor. Plain and non-reflective. Smooth the fabric and pull out the packaging creases with your hands.
  3. Open the whole garmentSleeves out to the sides and fully visible, hem flat and unfolded, collar and any closure laid as it would sit. Nothing tucked under, nothing overlapping itself.
  4. Shoot straight downHold the phone parallel to the surface directly above the centre of the piece, and fill most of the frame. Stand on a chair for a long dress rather than backing off at an angle.
  5. Take one detail frameMove in close on the print, the weave, or any hardware and take a second shot. On a plain garment you can skip this; on anything patterned it is the difference between your print and a print.
  6. Check it before you uploadLook at the photo and ask whether someone who had never seen the piece could describe it from this image alone. If any part of that description would be a guess, reshoot that part.

The cases that stay hard

Some garments are difficult no matter how well you shoot them, and it is more useful to say so than to promise otherwise. Sheer and mesh fabrics are ambiguous by nature, because the correct render depends on what is behind them. High-shine satin and sequins change appearance completely with the angle of light, so a flat-lay under one soft source underdescribes them. Very structured tailoring, where the whole point is how a shoulder is built, is where rendered garments are most likely to look almost right.

For those pieces, the practical answer is more input rather than better prompting: a flat-lay plus a detail frame plus, where you have one, a photograph of the piece actually worn. If a garment is both difficult and commercially central, it is also the piece most worth photographing properly for real.

And the photo of the person

The same logic applies to the model photo, with one addition: it is the reference for a face and a body that has to stay recognisable across an entire collection, so it is worth more care than any single garment shot. Even, soft light on the face, a neutral expression, the body fully in frame and not cropped, plain background, and clothing that is close-fitting enough that the proportions are readable.

You do this once. Every shoot afterwards inherits it, so ten minutes here is repaid across every image you generate for the rest of the season.

Questions

Why does the AI keep changing my print?
Almost always because the print was underdescribed in the input: shot at an angle so the repeat is skewed, too small in the frame to resolve, or lit unevenly. Shoot straight down, fill the frame, and add one close detail frame of the pattern.
Can I use a photo of the garment on a hanger?
Yes, and it often works well, because a hanger shows how the piece falls. The requirements are the same: shoot straight on rather than up or down at it, keep the whole garment visible with sleeves not overlapping the body, and use one light source.
Do I need a professional camera?
No. A recent phone in indirect daylight outperforms a good camera in bad light for this purpose, because what matters is even lighting, a square-on angle, and complete visibility of the garment rather than sensor quality.
Should the garment be ironed?
Packaging creases should be smoothed out, because a hard fold can read as a seam or a drape line and survive into the render. Natural fabric texture should be left alone.
